Edward Hood Dawson, Jr. is the editor and publisher of the Herald-Dispatch Newspaper. In 1966, he was attending high school in Chester, S.C., his sister, Ann, is the reason he became interested in journalism. She was the editor of the newspaper then and needed someone to cover the homecoming football game. She asked her brother and he accepted. From then on he was hooked. He later took over the editor job that was once his sister’s.
Mr. Dawson was a man who didn’t care about being well-known.
“I have worked for a lot of good newspapers and with a lot of good people. Those are the things I think most about. Some of it involves awards but, I guess I think more about the organizations and the people that I’ve gotten to know,” Ed said.
Leah Edwards, the Media Communication Specialist at Marshall University, said “I have worked with Ed on several different community projects. I’ve always found him to be a levelheaded and calm person, who is genuinely interested in making our community a great place to live.
When Dawson went off to the Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., he wrote for the paper there as well. Before he graduated he was the editor there also. While in his free time during college he also did some reporting for the local newspaper.
Edward Hood Dawson Jr. was born on Aug 11, 1949 in Chester, S.C. to Edward Hood Dawson Sr. and Caroline Pryor Marion Dawson. He has two siblings: Ann Dawson Castle and Bob Dawson. He graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. with a degree in history and earned a master’s degree in mass communications at the University of South Carolina.
After college Ed met his wife, Cindy. They met through friends in Charlotte, N.C. They have two children: Hood Dawson, who is a junior at the University of South Carolina and May Dawson of Charlotte, N.C.
Before becoming the editor and publisher of the Herald-Dispatch he worked at several other newspapers. He was the editor at the Public Opinion in Chambersburg, P.A. for two years, the editor at the Ashville Citizen Times in Ashville, N.C. for ten years, he did news editing at Greenville News Piedmont in Greenville, S.C. and at the Augusta Chronicle in Augusta, G.A., and reporting at the Chester news and Reporter in Chester, S.C.
Whether you are in the journalism field or wondering what exactly to do with your life, Ed Dawson is a real inspiration. He has accomplished everything from just helping out his sister one Friday night.

The Tri-State Area Boy Scout Council: Influencing the Lives of Local Boys
The Boy Scouts of America can make a difference in an individual as well as in a community. The lives of three brothers Nathan Payne, 20, Alex Payne, 17, and Tyler Payne were affected by Boy Scouts.
Nathan participated as a Boy Scout until he turned 18. He became an Eagle Scout, which means he has the highest ranking as a Boy Scout possible. He is now an Assistant Scout Master and has had that position for the past three years.
“Boy Scouts has taught me to be a better citizen in the community and important life lessons,” Nathan said. “I have learned interpersonal skills and leadership skills in order to deal with various situations.”
Alex has been in Boy Scouts for 11 years and has also earned an Eagle Scout position. As a senior at South Point High School, Alex thinks the Boy Scouts has taught him and, will help him throughout the upcoming year.
“I have learned many things like the basics of survival and society. Boy Scouts has taught me to work hard, whether it’s in the woods or in the classroom, and to get things done and not procrastinate,” Alex said. “I think these characteristics will help me out while trying to get into college and therefore I have a head start.”
Tyler has been working towards his Eagle position for eight years, and his ranking now is a Heart Scout. His goal of becoming an Eagle Scout is not easily accomplished.
“I want to try to get every badge that is possible,” Tyler said. “There has only been, like, two people who has ever done that.”
The Boy Scouts of America really focus on a few goals when it comes to the boys lives.
“Our mission is to help instill values that help youth make ethical decisions throughout their lives,” said Rick Loudin, scout executive. “We are an educational program that provides citizenship training, leadership training, and strives to make people physically and mentally fit.”
Boy Scouts includes four primary programs: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing and Exploring. The Venturing and Exploring programs are coed from ages 13 to 20. All of the programs consist of weekly meetings which members must participate in.
Loudin also said that the Boy Scouts do numerous fun things throughout the year. They go camping, which sometimes consists of 50 mile backpacking and 100 mile canoe trips. They have days when they go to Marshall University football games and get honored for being a Scout. They also get to go to one practice a year and meet the Marshall University football players.
Community service is a big part of scouting, because it makes the Scouts better citizens while helping the community.
“In the Tri-State they give between 100,000 to 150,000 hours of community service a year, which can be anything from volunteering at football games to cleaning up the parks in the community,” Loudin said.
The Tri-State area holds about 2,500 Scouts. Every year, they conduct a few fundraisers and the most popular one is the Boy Scout popcorn, which brings in the majority of their fundraiser money. They also have two golf tournaments a year and a luncheon.
“It is the most honoring feeling I have ever had,” Nathan said. “The President of the United States sends you a letter congratulating you and it feels great.”
Loudin believes receiving an Eagle will push boys to succeed.
“Eleven out of the 12 astronauts that have landed on the moon were Eagle Scouts,” Loudin said. “If a boy gets in Scouts and stays five years then they are most likely to graduate high school and college.”
The Tri-State Area Boy Scout Council serves Boy Scouts in ten counties throughout West Virginia., Ohio and Kentucky. They are also one of the 32 agencies funded by the United Way of River Cities.
“The United Way of River Cities funded us $40,000 this last year. All of the money funded is used for program assistance. It does a number of things such as training for adults to lead, providing material to make meetings better, and many other things,” Loudin said.
The Tri-State Area Boy Scout Council has changed lives in many ways and is still changing lives.

Huntington City Council Meeting
Huntington City Council voted Monday evening to accept stimulus dollars that will be used to provide a safer link between Pullman Square and Heritage Village.
The council voted 9-0 to accept the $160,000 grant from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. The money will be used on improving the alley between 10th and 11th streets. There were two councilmen who did not vote. Councilman Steve Williams was absent and Councilman Nate Randolph didn’t vote because he is employed by the architectural firm that has worked on the project.
The Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau is located in the Heritage Village. Heritage Village also includes shops and businesses at the old B&O Railroad depot.
Charles Holley, director of development and planning for the city, said “The work will be administered by the state Division of Highways and will consist of a concrete sidewalk and curbs, ornamental streetlights and fencing and landscaping. The CVB is assisting with the project by working with American Electric Power to install a brick and panel fence around the electrical substation on the northwest corner of 11th Street and 21/2 Alley.”
Holley also said that the new fence will block the community from seeing the substation and it will enhance the Ohio River.
The project could be completed by Fall 2010 if everything stays on schedule.
DOG TETHERING: The council has tried two times to pass this ordinance. They finally passed the latest proposal.
The new proposal included the time of day and the temperature would be taken into consideration. The fines for dog tethering begin at $50 and rise to $500 for four or more offenses.
FIRETRUCKS: The council approved the authorizing of two new fire trucks for the Fire Department. They approved for a new pumper truck for $347,680 and a ladder truck for $974, 799.
POLICE VEHICLES: The council approved to purchase three 2010 Chevy Tahoes and one cruiser for the Police Department. The Tahoes are $83, 213 and the cruiser is $24, 290.
SV VOLLEYBALL: The council approved a resolution honoring the Spring Valley High School volleyball team for winning the state Class AAA championship on Nov. 14.

Thanksgiving Fun
Thanksgiving break is filled with many things from a great dinner to the beginning of Christmas cheer. This Thanksgiving break was filled with many different things than normal for me but also many traditional aspects as well.
Well, the first Saturday was a normal Saturday for my boyfriend and me. We watched the Ohio State game and then went to eat. Sunday was also another normal day with a twist. We went to church and then came home and watched the Dallas game. We then went to his mom’s house and made cute little penguins out of bowling pins.
I am over the missions at my church. Since the youth group was out of school for the week, the youth leaders and I had planned a little mission work for them to do. We all went to the Ronald McDonald House, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, and made food for all the families staying there. Then after we finished there, we went to the Operation Christmas Child and helped out there for a few hours.
I worked Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday night I went to see “New Moon” with my boyfriend. It was great. Wednesday evening, I made pumpkin rolls to take to Nathan’s (my boyfriend) family Thanksgivings. My mom made me take them because I am not a good cook and she’s teaching me how to do things. Anyway I made those and they were a hit by the way. Then I made a pumpkin pie for my family’s dinner.
Thursday was very hectic. First, we had to go to Nathan’s mom’s Thanksgiving dinner at one. Then we were to be at my house at three. Finally, we had to go to his dad’s Thanksgiving at six. We watched Dallas beat the Raiders. Then went back to my house and watched Christmas movies.
Friday I slept all day then went to dinner. We then came back to my house and watched more Christmas movies. Saturday was an adventure. Nathan’s dad took us all to the mall. Us all include Nathan, his brother, his sister, and myself. He wanted to get an idea of what we want for Christmas. Then he took us to Logan’s for lunch. After all of this we went back to Nathan’s house to relax. Little did I know I was getting a Christmas present. It was the most beautiful necklace I had ever received. Two heart intertwine and have diamonds through it.
Sunday was a Sunday. I went to church, ate, slept, went to church again, and then my dad took me to see “Blind Side”. So every Thanksgiving is different so cherish each one.

United Way Speakers Visit Future Journalists
United Way speakers visited journalism students on Thursday. The speakers were Laura Gilliam, the Executive Director of the United Way of River Cities, and Cassey Bowden, the Director of Resource Development and Marketing Director.
Gilliam started out by giving the history of United Way. She informed the students that it started in 1922 and that it has changed since then.
The United Way of River Cities supports 5 counties in West Virginia, they are: Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, Lawrence, and Mason. Within these 5 counties there are over 200 non-profit organizations.
Gilliam said, "There are 4 focus areas that the United Way is based on, which are: Learning and Earning, Families and Children, Health and Wellness, Basic Needs and Unforeseen Hardships." She then said that these focus areas are fairly new and revised.
"United Way used to just be a national organization but now it is worldwide," Gilliam explained.
Then Gilliam turned the floor over to Bowden. Bowden then explained what the phrase "Live United" means.
"Live United means that together we can unite and make a better tomorrow."
She then went on to talk about the different fundraisers that the United Way of River Cities does to raise money for the agencies that they represent. For the last two years they have done the Putt and Play Tournament. This is a tournament that the whole family can participate in. It is simply a putt putt golf tournament. Another fundraiser is the 5K Championship which brings out nearly 500 runners every year. The fundraiser that brings in the most money is the Workplace Pledge. This is where a company asks its employees to pledge money to help the United Way reach their goal.
The 2009 goal for the United Way of River Cities is 1.4 million dollars. The deadline for this campaign is December 31, 2009.

Questions Regarding United Way Guests
On Thursday, the United Way of River Cities guests are coming to JMC 201.
There are five questions that I have regarding to United Way itself. What is United Way and their mission? Did they meet their goal last year? If they did not meet their goal, what did it end up being? Does the United Way file taxes? What organizations does the United Way of River Cities affiliate with and how are they affiliated? What is the United Way of River Cities goals for this year?
My non-profit organization that I am doing my project on is Boy Scouts-Tri State Area Council. The two question that I am going to ask our guests about them are: How much money did my organization make last year? Do they support any good causes in the Tri-state area?
There are five questions that I am going to ask Boy Scouts-Tri State Area Council. The first thing I want to ask is, do you file taxes? Out of all the money raised last year how much of it went to more fundraising? What are the goals of this organization? Did you meet your fundraising goal last year? What are your goals for this year?

My Thoughts On News Briefing.
When I first watched a news brief I thought that it was similar to a news conference. The more I watch them the more I realize that they are aq not like news conferences at all. The reason I am starting to think this is because news conferences are a question and answer setting. News briefs on the other hand are more of a formal type meeting.
News briefs are more formal because at the beginning the press secretary takes a few moments to explain where the president is going in the next few days and what he will be doing while he is gone. The press secretary then starts bringing up things that are going on in the government. When this happens, the reporters start asking questions. Sometimes the questions are ones that the speaker does not want to answer but other times he does not mind.
I believe that the reporters and the press secretary understand eachother. They work together. They see one another everday. That's another difference between news conferences and news briefings. At news conferences, any reporter can be there to get the news. In news briefings, there are designated reporters to do the job.
I needed to reword question and answer in the first paragraph, myself.

Revisions For Extra Credit
The United Way of River Cities has many affiliates that work with them throughout the year. In JMC 201 all of the students have to choose an affiliate and do research on them. Periods, pg 362, 2009 AP Stylebook.
As a JMC 201 student, I have chosen to do my project on the Boy Scouts-Tri State Area Council. Commas, pg 357, 2009 AP Stylebook, Hyphenated words, pg 361, 2009 AP Stylebook. The Boy Scouts do many activities throughout the year.
The Boy Scouts are designed to mold the youth into adults with character who help the community. The boys who just start out in Boy Scouts are known as cubs and if they go all the way through the training and get all the minimum badges then they can become an eagle scout.
There are activities all year long that the Boy Scouts attend. They have many camps. These camps can last anywhere from a day to weeks long. There are even camps that their families attend with them. They also do food drives and sell popcorn.
I will be researching the Tri-State Boy Scouts in more depth later on in the month.

October 7 Press Brief
Robert Gibbs, the press secretary, answered questions at the October 7 Press Brief.
Gibbs started out by giving the president's travel schedule. At a point during this section he admitted that he had not looked at the president's schedule the day before. In the description of the travel schedule, he would discuss where the president was going, how long he would be there, why he was going there, and who he was going to speak to.
The way the press brief was going it seemed that the reporters were the ones who set the time frame, not Gibbs. The reason is because throughout the whole meeting the reporter's would say "according to the New York Times." So therefore the New York Times was actually setting the time frame, which they are reporters.
The reporters did not ask too many probing questions. There were a few questions that Gibbs did not want to answer so he would ignore the reporter. Most of the time the reporters asked questions that Gibbs did not mind to answer.

United Way Of River Cities
The United Way of River Cities is a great foundation. It is a non-profit organization that helps unfortunate people in the region.
Some of the things that the United Way of River Cities focuses on is children and their families, unforeseen hardships, and learning. The way that they get their money in order to help these situations is by fundraising, grants, and donations.
In the recent news of the United Way of River Cities was that they released their "Common Good Forecaster". The "Common Good Forecaster" shows how the conditions might change in a community if the educational outcomes were to improve, even on the county level.

Leads
On Thursday we discussed some of our fellow students' leads that they had used in their blogs. Some of them were too long and others had made silly mistakes. I believe for the most part the majority of our class is understanding the principles of good journalism. By the end of the semester I know I will be able to write a lead in a professional manner.

Kermit Murder
WSAZ did a story on Wednesday about a murder that happened in Kermit, WV. The Broadcast of the story gave a little too much information. It said that the family of the murderer, Roger Stroud, was supporting him and telling people that he was a good person. The online version of the story from WSAZ went into a little more detail. This version explained exactly what Stroud did when killing his wife. They were arguing, so then he got his gun, he shot her several times, he then put her in a refrigerator that was on his truck, he then proceeded to push the refrigerator over a hillside. WSAZ is just being a little too informative about the situation. On the other hand AP version was much shorter and not as informative. It just gave the readers the details they needed to know.
Obama Differences
The AP, New York Times, and the NBC Nightly News all have differences between how they perceived and delivered President Obama's address at the UN on Wednesday.
The AP article use President Obama or just Obama, the New York Times use President Obama and then go to use Mr. Obama, but Nightly News strictly just used President Obama. The New York Times said that the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, showed no reaction while listening to Obama's address. NBC Nightly News claimed that he was making boring notions throughout the whole address. One of the bigger differences was that the AP article spelled the Libyan leader's name as Moammar Gadhafi but the New York Times spelled it as Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.
NBC Nightly News said everything that they needed within a minute or so, while if you would read one of the articles from AP or New York Times it would take a little longer because print goes into more detail.

Broadcast Writing
Professor Chris Swindell came to Journalism 201 on Tuesday to inform the students about Broadcast Writing. Mr. Swindell says, "You have to know how to write Broadcast News in order to write Print News." His reasons is because Broadcast News is written through the way we speak. If it does not sound good through the ear then it's not good.
He gave the JMC students an assignment so they could practice Broadcast News writing.
My example is below:

Trial Between Monroe and Lawrence Comes to a Rest
Last November a local entertainer claimed that a woman hit him in the head with a bottle at a bar. The trial for this case was set for Wednesday, September 2, 2009 in Judge Judy's Court Room.
Ty G. Monroe, the plaintiff, showed up nicely dressed in a pink button up shirt, pink tie, and a brown vest. The defendant, Dion Lawrence, was wearing a brown pant suit. Monroe explained what had happened that night in a very pleasant manner. He said that he was working in the local bar as an entertainer that night. He was walking around socializing and all of a sudden he felt a beer bottle smash against his head. Then the next thing he knew was that there was blood all over his new outfit. Monroe then proceeded to hand the judge the medical bills and the police report. He also said that Lawrence had came up to him after she threw the bottle and said that she would pay the medical bills from the injury, but she never did.
Lawrence explained her side of the story in a not so pleasant attitude. She said that she was walking throughout the bar and she felt a hand touch her butt. She then decided to throw the bottle that was in her hand and try and hit the person whom had touched her. She then goes on to say that she did not intentionally hit Monroe with the bottle. Judge Judy then asks why she never paid for the medical bills and Lawrence then said, "Because I don't think I have to. It's not my responsibility."
Judge Judy ruling in this case was that the defendant owed the plaintiff $3, 000.00. There was no reaction from either Monroe or Lawrence.
Judge Judy then asks Lawrence what defense she had to give to her. Lawrence then replied, "The bottle wasn't aimed toward him, he got in the way." The judge then went on to yell, "That's not a defense!" So by this example we can clearly see that Judge Judy was in her regular form irritable and harsh.

Charleston Man and Woman Appear on "Judge Judy"
On Monday August 31, 2009, a Charleston man and woman appeared on "Judge Judy" The trial: Jones vs. Casdorph was taken place in Jude Judy's Court Room in Los Angeles, California. Judge Judy Scheindlin, wearing a black judges robe, presented herself to be a confident, criticizing, and tough judge. On the other hand the plaintiff and the defendant weren't so lucky. The plaintiff, Samantha Jones, 23, appeared to be a little frustrated. The red shirt she was wearing definitely matched her sassy attitude. The defendant, Christopher Casdorph, 29, seemed a little nervous but got more confident as the trial went along.
The plaintiff, Samantha Jones, claims that Casdorph owes her money for fines that she had payed for him and damages to her car that he created. She gave Judge Judy pictures of the dent that he kicked into her car and the bank statements of the money he owes her. The defendant, Christopher Casdorph, claimed that she did pay for his fines but they were living together and they did it to make a better life for their son. He also admitted to kicking her car and making dents into it.
Judge Judy is hard to read sometimes, considering her sarcastic attitude towards things. Judge Judy seemed a little persuaded by Jones' evidence considering she gave her pictures of the damages and bank statements. Judge Judy seemed to be on Casdorph's side. The reason for this is because at one point in the trial she looked at Jones and said, "He sure doesn't look like he lies." So she definitely took his side on a few things. Judge Judy also pointed out that he has to be a good parent because otherwise he would not have full custody of an 8 year old.
So in the comments that she had said about Casdorph we can tell that she is on his side. Even though Judge Judy was taking up for Casdorph she still has to be lawfully fair. Therefore she told him that he has to pay for his fines that he had and for Jones' car damages, which all together was $1, 300.00.
The reaction from the plaintiff was she just wanted the car damages taken care of, and that she hopes that he can become a better father. The defendant was just happy that the trial was over with and he just wants to be able to see his son.
Judge Judy is usually very harsh when it comes to her court room. During this trial she was about mediocre when it came to her sarcastic and demanding attitude. She only got frustrated a couple of times. The first time she got a little aggravated was because Jones kept bringing up that they fought all the time. She finally just said listen I don't care about your fighting, we have established that you all were fighting so let's get on with the hearing. The second time was when Casdorph was not answering a question and he seemed a little confused by it. She finally said Hey it's not that hard of a question either yes or no. So she wasn't her usual self but she was still pretty intimidating.

Mad Men
The article about Mad Men, in the New York Times today and written by Dave Itzkoff, was wrote in a very different way. I perceived the writing style to be like a movie review. Itzkoff would go into a little bit of detail about certain events in the episode and then keep you hanging. After you read a few of them you wanted to just go and check out the show for yourself. I really enjoyed this type of writing because it kept my attention and made me want to read more to find out what else happened in the show.

What is News?
Deborah Potter wrote an article about what news really is. http://www.america.gov/st/democracyhr-english/2008/april/20080416211618eaifas0.8870203.html She explains that news is what is new; it’s what’s happening. She goes into asking what actually makes news newsworthy? There are many things that the reporter has to take into consideration prior to writing the story. The first is timeliness. Did the story happen recently, if so it could be newsworthy. The second factor is impact. Does it affect people in the viewing area? The next is proximity. How close did this news happen to the viewing area? The fourth is Controversy. Does is involve debate? The next is prominence. Is the person involved well known? The sixth is currency. Are people here talking about this? The seventh is Oddity. Is this news unusual? The next things she goes into talking about is the differences between hard news and soft news. Hard news is something that is happening now and soft news is news that can be evergreen, which means can be used whenever because it will never be old. I believe that Potter explained what news really is in a way that anyone can understand it.
What I Know About News On The Second Day of JMC 201 at Marshall University.
Repoters have a very interesting career. They gather information and put it in a way that the citizens can get a nice understanding of what happened. There are a few different types of news writing that I would like ot partake in. I love the idea of writing for fashion news, like telling people what is going on in the world of fashion. The next thing, on a more iimportant note, is International Affairs. I like knowing what is going on around the world.
News is important ,new, unique information. I like to think that news is important, new, unique information that people want to know about and it is put in a way that is easier for us as individuals to perceive it. I believe that the definition of news is changing to an extent. People in the world are more interested in pop culture that what is really important. For instance, I believe that the health reform is way more important than Michael Jackson's death. Everyone dies, he was just a person like you or me. I know that he was famous for being the King of Pop, but he's been dead for almost two months now, move on. No one really knows all of the ideas behind the health reform because the media is stuck on Michael Jackson. So therefore the definition of news is changing from topics that are not as impor0tant and new to topics that the majority of the population wants to hear about.
Out of the seven qualities of news I only know a few which are: timeliness, space, and news worthy, attribution, and accuracy. But, I will have the rest of the answer by the end of the semester. The list of Repoter's Goals in News Writing are: accuracy, attribution, completeness, balance and fairness, objectivity, brevity and focus, and well-written. This is what I know starting out. Stay tuned for the rest of the story.

1999 Herd Football Compared to 2009 Team
In 1999 the Thundering Herd had so many great players, such as Chad Pennington, Randy Moss, and Andre O'Neil. http://http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall/x1562580290/Freshman-linebacker-looking-for-playing-time-in-first-year That just has me wondering if the 2009 team has talented players. In the Herald Dispatch there are quit a few articles on the freshmen Who are on the team. Quanthony Fletcher is a freshman linebacker and is one of the freshmen who might get to play in games. To be a freshman and hear those words must be an awesome feeling, considering sophomores and up are usually the only ones whom get to play regularly. Then there is senior Cody Slate. Snyder says that this year is going to be the best year in awhile, with the combination of Slate and Smith it is going to be one of the best tandems in the tight ends of the country.http://http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x1562580284/So-far-so-good-for-MU-football-in-2009 So will these Marshall football players stand up to the players from a decade ago? We will see in a couple of weeks, hopefully they do. GO HERD!!!
Is Scotland Doing The Right Thing?
Most Americans are probably thinking that Scotland's minister, Kenny McASkill, is not doing his job. On Monday he let the Lockerbie bomber, Megrahi, return to his home country of Libya. The reason behind his decision is because the bomber has prostate cancer and wanted to spend his last days with his family, which I think is the ethical thing to do. Just think about it if you were in prison and found out that you had cancer wouldn't you want to spend your last days with your family? In the United States people are upset because there were about 270 Americans killed in that bombing.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/18/AR2009081800609.html FBI director Robert Mueller wrote to MacAskill, saying: "Your action makes a mockery of the rule of law (and) gives comfort to terrorists." http://http//www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/24/AR2009082401436.html I think that what Mueller said was a little harsh. The man was only having compassion on the bomber. I think people in this world have lost their compassion. If we all would have a little more compassion and help people this world would change. It's not going to change by going green, but by helping people and caring for others, even if they have done you wrong. Just a little something to think about.
